Engineering overview
Where it fits
Residential pedestrian gate (street boundary)
1100 × 2000 mm Porta pedestrian gate matched to a Lineo or Vento fence run along a street frontage. Manual operation with mortise lock and optional keypad, providing a clean, secure foot entry.
Visually continues the fence skin without a perceptible break; integrated mortise lock is standard, not an upgrade.
Vehicle driveway swing gate (single residence)
Double-leaf swing gate at 3500 to 4000 mm clear opening, electromechanical drive with safety photocells and flashing beacon. Infill matched to fence series; remote control plus keypad backup at the pillar for resident and service access.
3D-adjustable hinges absorb foundation settlement and seasonal movement, maintaining alignment over years of cycling.
Wide cantilever sliding gate (estate / commercial)
6000 mm cantilever sliding gate where a swing footprint is unavailable due to slope, snow accumulation or interior turning radius. RTS-motorised drive with inductive vehicle detection and obstacle reversing.
Sized for daily commercial cycles; counterweight overhang requires continuous reinforced track foundation along the full travel length.
Smart-home access (keypad + BLE + RFID combo)
Combined access stack: BLE smartphone proximity unlock for residents, RFID fobs for cleaning and maintenance staff, keypad for time-limited guest codes. All credentials managed through a single controller integrated with the home automation system.
Single controller manages all four credential types; controller speaks Zigbee/Matter for native smart-home integration.
Commercial cycle-intensive boundary (hotel / school)
Boutique hotel or independent school entry handling 200 to 400 cycles per day. Reinforced hinge posts, heavy-duty electromechanical drive, video intercom at reception, RFID for staff vehicles.
Tested cycle count above 100,000 operations; specified for sustained operation with scheduled annual service.
How it compares
Generic aluminium gate kits (no fence match)▾
Pros
- +Lower upfront cost
- +Faster lead time
- +Wide compatibility with generic posts
Cons
- −Foreign object reading at the entrance
- −Standalone proportions and infill patterns
- −Finishes unlikely to match adjacent fence batch
Why VisioMod
Off-shelf aluminium gate kits are sold as standalone products with their own proportions, infill patterns and finishes. Porta is engineered as a continuation of the fence: identical infill designs, identical post sections, identical anodised or powder-coated finish batches.
Wrought iron gate▾
Pros
- +Strong heritage character
- +Familiar craft tradition
Cons
- −Significant weight demands heavier hinges and motors
- −Repainting on a 5-7 year cycle
- −Corrosion at welds and fixings in coastal exposure
Why VisioMod
Traditional wrought iron offers heritage character but brings significant weight, requires repainting, and corrodes in coastal environments. Porta uses marine-grade aluminium with a factory-applied finish warranted for 10 years or more.
Off-shelf automatic gate (no design coordination)▾
Pros
- +Bundled drive + leaf simplifies procurement
- +Fast install
Cons
- −Fixed product limits fence coordination
- −Motor housing exposed as visible box
- −Finish-matching to adjacent fence rare
Why VisioMod
Mass-market automatic gates bundle drive and leaf as a fixed product. Porta separates the drive choice from the leaf design: any of the eight infills can be combined with any drive class, and motor housings are detailed to sit behind the hinge post or below grade.
Reading on the facade
The gate is the most scrutinised single element of any boundary, so Porta is detailed to read as continuation rather than interruption. The first decision is infill strategy: either the fence pattern carries unbroken across the gate leaf, which is the right move for long Lineo or Vento runs where rhythm is the design idea, or the gate becomes a deliberate accent using a different series, typically an Inciso laser-cut motif framed by the same posts, marking the entrance as a discrete event. Both readings are valid and Porta supports either without custom fabrication. Post sections at the gate match the fence post sections, so the eye does not register a thicker frame at the opening. Motor housings on electromechanical and sliding variants are specified either as below-grade foundation boxes or as concealed in-post units, removing the surface-mounted actuator that typically signals an aftermarket installation. Access-control hardware is finish-matched to the gate frame and recessed where possible.
Foundation & site notes
Swing gates require a dedicated reinforced hinge-side post in 140 × 140 mm section, set in a concrete foundation sized to resist the cantilever moment of the leaf at full extension and full wind load. Cantilever sliding gates require a continuous reinforced track foundation along the full travel length plus the counterweight overhang, typically 1.5 times the clear opening, with embedded conduit for the drive and limit-switch wiring. Motor power and access-control low-voltage runs are pulled through separate conduits to the gate controller cabinet, which should sit within 15 m of the drive for voltage drop reasons. Access-control integration to the site network uses Cat 6 or fibre to the controller depending on distance and intercom video bandwidth. All foundations are detailed to local frost-zone depth in accordance with DIN EN 1997 (Eurocode 7), typically 800 to 1200 mm in central European climates.
Care schedule
| Frequency | Task | Duration | Tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| Every 6 months | Hinge lubrication and 3D alignment check — clean pivot points, apply manufacturer-specified grease, verify leaf swings true and closes onto the lock keeper without scraping | ||
| Annually | Mortise lock function test and cylinder service — operate lock 20 cycles, lubricate mechanism with PTFE-based dry lubricant, check strike plate alignment after seasonal movement | ||
| Annually | Motor service for electromechanical and RTS drives — inspect drive arms or rack, verify torque limiter setting, test obstacle detection and photocell reversing function, log cycle count | ||
| Annually | Access-control firmware update — apply latest controller firmware, audit credential list, remove revoked RFID and BLE entries, verify intercom audio and video on each unit | ||
| Annually | Weatherseal and brush-strip check — inspect perimeter seals on motor housings and below-leaf brush strips on sliding gates, replace any compressed or cracked sections | ||
| Every 2 years | Foundation and post integrity inspection — check for hairline cracks at hinge-post base, verify post plumb after settlement, retorque foundation anchors to specified value | ||
| Every 5 years | Battery replacement on RTS solar drives and intercom backup units — replace 24 V DC battery banks per manufacturer cycle rating, dispose of old cells through certified recycler |
